About The Owner & Property
My name is Marc Mataya. I am originally from Pittsburgh, PA, attended The Ohio State University 88-93, then moved to Charlotte in 1993 to be in the 4th largest banking industry in the country. My background is software development but I have always been in the do-it-yourself construction world since I was a child. My father and I worked on remodeling my Mother's hair salons for most of my childhood years which is where I learned all of the construction trades.
Hassell Place historically was an open horse pasture used for training the police equestrian teams. The neighborhood then got established as a community subdivision called Countrywide back in 1945 where they built small ranch-style homes that were all approximately 40' wide by 30' deep with a single car driveway and no garages. The street used to be a cul-de-sac private road, but the back end was opened up to Brandywine and it is now a public city street so no HOA, no POA, no covenants, no dues, and no boards.
Fast forward to 2025, Hassell Place is one of the best streets in Charlotte with sidewalks and offers walking distance to Park Road Shopping Center, the new greenway connection, Selwyn and Colony shops and restaurants, and a short walk to Freedom Park. It is also perfectly centralized and a short drive to South Park Mall, 12 minutes to the airport and 10 minutes to uptown.
This 1947 construction home was purchased by Kelly and I in 2004 with the intent to do an entire remodel for the purpose of sending our daughter Lindsay to the Myers Park School District schools (Selwyn Elementary, AG Middle & Myers Park High). I spent the next year and a half building the house full-time. Of course I had help, but essentially I was swinging a hammer every day paying attention to every detail in every room. The house is filled to the brim with creative, intuitive, artistic, classic and timeless features.
Born in 2004, Lindsay is now a junior at Georgia so it is time to pass the torch so that another family can enjoy the fantastic schools and this great location to raise their family.
Stephanie and I have a farm and future horse stabling business up in the mountains and plan on moving there permanently, but we will be back in town monthly to visit my factory. I invented the Leaf Burrito right here in the front yard and now we are in Lowe's & Home Depot and sell these reusable yard debris bags around the country. Each bag is hand-made right here in Charlotte.
